Last at the quarter, Phoos Girl gained ground on her rivals and seized a narrow lead into the stretch to take the $10,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Driver Marc St Louis sat seventh with the Danielle Neil owned-and-trained mare as Neon Moon lost the lead to Bourbon Seelster passed a :28.4 quarter. Favourite Cenalta Call Girl, positioned fifth, tipped first over to brush by Bourbon Seelster for the lead past a :58 half.
Regal Luck edged first over approaching three-quarters as Phoos Girl mounted her bid, circling three wide through a 1:26.4 third quarter and grabbing a neck lead into the stretch. The six-year-old daughter of Badlands Hanover widened her advantage slightly as she hit the wire first in 1:57.1 three-quarter lengths better than Cenalta Call Girl. Tilikum, riding the rail, took third.
Winning her 21st race from 93 starts, Phoos Girl has now earned $123,617 and paid $16.10 to win.
Robintheatm stole the race with a slow pace to wire her competition in the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace. Also driven by St Louis for trainer Danielle Neil, the seven-year-old Nuclear Breeze mare set splits of :28.2, :58 and 1:27.2 before hitting the finish in 1:57.4. She held off pocket-sitter Choose My Jet rallying but settling for second while Machs Echo, tracking the top two, took third.
Owned by Stewart McQueen, Robintheatm won her 18th race from 113 starts, earning $110,163. She paid $6.70 to win.
