Comes Home First went from last to first, powering past his rivals through a 'sloppy' stretch to score a narrow victory in Wednesday night's featured $10,500 Open Pace at Fraser Downs.
Comes Home First trailed the six-horse field that was led by favourite Sterling Cooper (Bill Davis), a recent back-to-back Open winner who crossed to command from the far outside ahead of insider Chewy Baca (Travis Bowman) through a :26.3 opening panel over the sloppy surface. As Sterling Cooper continued to front the field through middle panels of :57 and 1:25, Son Of Anarchy (Paul Davies) advanced from next-to-last to take over and held a slight advantage as the pacers spread across the track in a dash to the wire. However, trainer/driver Jim Marino sent Comes Home First out widest of all for a clear path and just got by Son Of Anarchy in a photo finish for the 1:55 win. Buddys Hope rallied from second over to finish third, just ahead of Chewy Baca in the four-across finish.
Sent postward at odds of 6-1, Comes Home First paid $14.30 to win.
Comes Home First has hit the board in all four of his Open starts this year with Wednesday's effort his first win of the season and 13th lifetime. J J J Stables own the five-year-old son of Brandons Cowboy, who has over $200,000 in career earnings.
