Barzy stayed red-hot on the young season, scoring his third victory in as many starts to open the 2024 season against conditioned trotting company at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, Jan. 21.
Starting from post four in the field of six, driver Scott Coulter opted to take the 2-5 favourite back to fifth in the early stages as Arrakis and Travis Henry got to the lead from the far outside post through a :28.3 first quarter.
The pace slowed as the trotters made their way to the halfway point in :59.4, where Coulter would tug the right line and begin the first-over journey from the backfield. Barzy gained steadily under Coulter urging in the third quarter, moving into third and approaching the wheel of the leader Arrakis at that station in 1:29.2.
Barzy wheeled within striking distance around the final turn, as a stubborn Arrakis held a 1-1/2-length lead at the top of the stretch. Arrakis proved tough on the lead; however, Barzy continued to surge, powering home in :29.1 to nail Arrakis by a neck on the line in 1:59. Raisealittlehill and Travis Cullen rounded out the trifecta.
Co-owned by Scott Coulter along with trainer Steve Coulter, Barzy picked up his fifth victory in his last six outings. The victory was the seventh overall in 38 lifetime starts and pushed the career bankroll to $52,147 for the five-year-old gelded son of Bar Hopping-Legzy.
