Favourites Deliver In Buffalo Opens

They used two different routes but post time favourites Bazooka Terror and Second Hand News each found their way to the winner's circle at Buffalo Raceway Wednesday night (January 21) in the co-featured events.

Bazooka Terror went from last to first to take the $10,500 Fillies and Mares Open Pace while Second Hand News showed plenty of heart in going gate-to-wire in the $10,500 Open Trot.

Buffalo Raceway's leading driver Kevin Cummings had a lot of patience with Bazooka Terror in the opener. After sitting sixth and last past the half-mile pole, the pair went first over down the backstretch and easily cruised past Memumsnotnice (Frank Milby) and Seascape Hanover (Ron Beback Jr.) in the stretch to score the 1-1/4 length win in 1:56.3. The winner turned in a :28.0 final panel.

Bazooka Terror (Western Terror-Lucky Liz) is a six-year-old mare owned by Leonard Segall and is trained by James Clouser Jr. In the money 29 of 41 races in 2014, Bazooka Terror has now earned $157,987 lifetime with the victory.

In the Open Trot, Second Hand News and Milby set the fractions of :28.4, :58.4 and 1:29 and had the the usually front-running Lutetium breathing down their neck until the top of the stretch.

Second Hand News was first attacked by Lutetium on the outside down the stretch with no luck. Then midway down the lane, Cummings dropped Lutetium into the passing lane but again to no avail as Second Hand News ($4.40) and Milby opened up a 2-1/4 length edge at the wire. They went the mile in 1:57.3. City Kid (Billy Dobson) finished in third.

The 13-year-old Second Hand News (Pathway To Victory-Mohawk Super Night) is owned by Vogel & Wags Nags Stable and Kent Conshafter. Ron Van Wagoner trained Second Hand News, now a perfect two-for-two on the young season.

Racing will continue on Friday night with a 13-race program set to begin at 6:35 p.m.
