Tricky Nick roared from the pocket at the top of the lane, surged past the leader, IC Caviar, and went on to capture Monday’s feature at The Meadows, a $12,700 conditioned trot.
Although IC Caviar enjoyed a fairly comfortable :57.4 on the point, he was no match for the late power of Tricky Nick, who defeated him by three-quarters of a length in 1:56 for Dan Rawlings. Favourite Mac Deeno experienced road problems en route to his third-place finish.
Richard Perfido trains Tricky Nick, an eight-year-old Bands Gold Chip-Broader Ambition gelding who lifted his lifetime bankroll to $316,756, for Thomas Mattingly.
Bob Key enjoyed a big Monday, collecting three wins — and two places finishes — with horses he owns and bred. Jim Pantaleano fashioned a triple on the 13-race card.
Live racing at The Meadows continues Tuesday when the program features a $5,453.61 carryover in the final-race Super Hi-5 and a $5,000 total-pool guarantee in the Pick 4 (races three through six). First post is 1:05 p.m.
