An unlucky fan, commonly referred to as a 'bridge jumper,' wagered in excess of $10,000 to show on Suzette Seelster through the YouBet Portland hub on the first race at Cal-Expo this past Saturday night (January 16)
.
The wager was about 80% of the show pool for the opener. Unfortunately, Suzette Seelster, the 4-5 favourite and the only mare in the race against five other geldings, finished fourth.
The mare's out-of-the-money finish rewarded players who had a show wager on either Music Man ($33.40), Carl Lewis N ($8.40), or Buck Pierce ($21.40), with very nice show payoffs.
“Hey, this isn’t the first time a bridge jumper has gotten stung on our program and I’m pretty sure it won't be the last," director of racing David Elliott said. "I give this person all the kudos in the world as this was a very gutsy bet because not only was Suzette Seelster the only girl in the race, she had been off 13 days, she was coming off of a scratch, plus she was off lasix for the first time since 2006. I sincerely hope this person didn't hurt themselves too badly."
Live racing resumes at Cal-Expo on Thursday, January 21 and continues through Sunday, January 24. First-race post time on Thursday is 5:35 p.m. (PST). First-race post time on Friday, January 22 is at 5:55 p.m. First-race post time on Saturday, January 23 is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. First-race post time on Sunday is at a special early time of 5:00 p.m.
