After winning her final four starts of 2024, Charmbo Stormy overcame the wintery weather and seven other pacing mares to score her fifth consecutive victory in Pop-Up Series action at Mohawk on Thursday (Jan. 2) night.
In round two of the Pop-Up for pacing fillies and mares who were non-winners of $30,000 in 2024, Charmbo Stormy left from post six with driver Austin Sorrie aboard.
Sorrie left alertly with the 4-5 favourite, quickly grabbing command of the field of eight though an opening quarter of :28.2. The field remained single file behind the favourite to the half in :57.2 before Mystic Wild Rose (Phil Hudon) was the first to move from fourth, charging first-over into third at three-quarters in 1:25.4. Pocket-sitter Fated Fire (James MacDonald) made a bid at the top of the lane, but was rebuffed by a gutsy Charmbo Stormy who reasserted herself by a length on the wire in 1:54.3. Fated Fire was second, One Last Bet (Bob McClure) finished third.
Jared Mann trains the winning seven-year-old daughter of Sportswriter-Charmbo Lucky who has five wins and and a third in the six starts since joining his barn on Nov. 28 of 2024. Owned by Ronald Nobes, Charmbo Stormy has won 17-times for her career, banking $122,409.
The second division of the Pop-Up for mares was won by Redlandbethanyjean (Bob McClure, $3.40) in 1:56.
Two additional Pop-Up Series got underway on the Thursday card, a trio of divisions for $20,000 claiming pacers who were non-winners of $40,000 lifetime were won by D A Captainobvious (Tyler Borth, $4.40) in 1:54.1, Ballykeel Painter (Bob McClure, $11.40) in 1:56.1, and Allstar Playboy (James MacDonald, $12.80) in 1:55.2.
Driver Billy Davis Jr. swept the pair of divisions with the same conditions for pacing mares, winning with Allsmokeandmirrors ($4.60, 1:57) and P L Rinchenia ($5.80, 1:55.2).
A new post time for Mohawk of 6:30 p.m. came into effect on Thursday and will continue through the winter with live harness racing every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
