Race-favourite Phoos Girl took control early and opened a wide margin heading into the final turn before strolling to the wire and winning the $10,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 2 Pace at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The Danielle Neil owned-and-trained mare took the front from post five heading to a :29.3 opening quarter while rail-starter Bourbon Seelster sat pocket. Phoos Girl then opened her lead to four-and-a-half lengths passing the half in 1:00.3 and three-quarters in 1:29.2. Bourbon Seelster narrowed on the leader turning for home but finished a half-length shy of the winner in the 2:00.1 mile. Cenalta Call Girl, giving chase from first over, took third.
A six-year-old mare by Badlands Hanover, Phoos Girl won her 20th race from 92 starts, earning $118,367. Marc St Louis steered the $6.20 winner.
In the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace, Regal Luck followed cover from second over before kicking wide into the stretch and sprinted past pocket-sitter Lady London to win by a head in 2:00.2.
Barockey set the pace passing a :29 opening quarter and continuing through a :59.1 half. Dazzling Rockette, from fourth, tipped first over and supplied cover to Regal Luck moving towards the backstretch. Barockey's lead shrunk to a head as Dazzling Rockette progressed towards three-quarters in 1:29.2 but soon retreated into the turn.
Regal Luck rallied off cover turning into the stretch while Lady London dove into the passing lane. Lady London gave chase as the John Smith trainee edged to the front nearing the wire to win. Twice An Angel, from third over, took third.
A nine-year-old mare by Stonebridge Regal, Regal Luck won her 35th race from 198 starts, earning $319,015. John Smith Jr. owns the $10.20 winner and Scott Young sat in the bike.
