Cold Winner Wires Open Trotters

Cold Winner took the lead at the start and never was headed in a 1:54.4 mile to win the $26,000 Open Handicap Trot on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Dover Downs

Ron Pierce piloted the winner to a never-look-back victory equaling his career fastest clocking of 1:54.4. Ed Gannon Jr. conditions the Credit Winner-Fancy Racket gelding for owners Dawn Gannon, Yannick Gingras and Fran Canzone. The win was the 36th lifetime for Cold Winner, a career winner of $564,518. Starsel (Daryl Bier) raced outside from mid backstretch but could not get to the winner. Libra Vita (Corey Callahan) was third best. Photo Maxx, winner of the previous two Opens, was fourth ending his winning streak.

In the first of two $18,000 Winners Over Trots, Counsel stormed between horses nearing the wire for Mike Cole to score a 1:56.1 victory. Whitey Moore conditions the royally-bred Andover Hall-Lookout Victory gelding for Glenda Fulcher. LTs Best (Vince Copeland) also came home in a hurry to finish second. Bi Z Mirada (Corey Callahan) was third. Nice Dream (Jim Morand) cut out the mile but had to settle for fourth.

Ken Wood-owned horses seem to like to win when he’s in Ghana drilling water for the natives. Two trotters, two starters, two winners. Anders Bluestone scored his second straight win taking a 1:54.3 decision in another $18,000 Winners Over division. Ross Wolfenden steered the five-year-old Yankee Glide-Annette Hanover horse owned by Wood and Bill Dittmar to an easy victory pulling away for a three-length win. Luvyabutleave (Tom Jackson) finished second in front of Good Feeling (Vince Copeland). The Matrix Hall, a Conway Hall-Melisssa Hall gelding, also driven by Wolfenden for Wood, Dittmar and another partner Steve Iaquinta, won the $13,000 trot in 1:56.2 to close out the program. Little Moon Lake (Ron Pierce) finished second. Second Hand News (Matt Kakaley) was third.
