The $30,000 Open Handicap Trot at Miami Valley Raceway produced a major upset on Wednesday (Jan. 18) as Rose Run Valor took full advantage of his inside post position to win at 31-1.
Driver Kayne Kauffman left the gate with Rose Run Valor, allowing only Pick Me Upper to front him when the full field passed the quarter in :28.2. Coveting the pocket journey, Kauffman and Rose Run Valor sat chilly as the half was passed in :58 and the third teletimer was paused at 1:26.2. A bold move by Sweet Mr Pinetucky had the eventual winner boxed in briefly around the final bend, but Rose Run Valor found enough room in the stretch to collar pacesetting Pick Me Upper and then hold off a fast-charging Angel Nation by a neck in 1:54.4.
Kauffman’s wife Natalie owns Rose Run Valor, a six-year-old son of Uncle Peter who narrowly missed a $100,000 season in 2022 and has banked $28,400 already this year.
Rose Run Valor returned $65.40 for a win ticket. A $2 exacta kicked back $203.60 and a correct 50-cent trifecta combo returned $135.45. The feature race was the final leg of a Pick 4 wager and the longshot result knocked out all live tickets, triggering a carryover of over $1,400 on the first 50-cent Pick 4 on Thursday (Jan. 19) beginning in the fourth race.
Post time is 4 p.m. every Sunday through Thursday afternoon at Miami Valley.
