Stake Your Claim Stable's Cole Diddy darted between horses in the stretch and rallied for a half-length victory in the $13,500 second race for conditioned pacers on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands
.
Driven by Brian Sears, Cole Diddy posted his first career win in 1:56.1. The four-year-old son of The Panderosa-Panniversary was making only his tenth lifetime start, but had a pair of seconds and thirds to his credit. Cole Diddy paid $4.20 to win. He will be sold as Hip No. 386 at the 2009 Tattersalls Mixed Sale on Monday afternoon at the Meadowlands.
Both Cole Diddy and second race runner-up Lets Go Surfing are eligible to the Art Unger Stake, a three-week series that begins February 1 and culminates in a $75,000 estimated final. The race is named for the longtime Meadowlands horseman, who passed away at age 73 on March 8, 2008. A trainer for more than 40 years, Unger campaigned Shadyside Trixie and Young Quinn, two of the leading pacers of the 1970s. His top Meadowlands performers also included Allnightcardgame, a winner of more than $200,000, and C The Priest, who earned $183,671.
