Saulsbrook Victor once again emerged the victor of the $34,000 Preferred Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park, taking his third consecutive win at the class on Saturday night (Jan. 14).
Driver Austin Sorrie sent the five-year-old Source Of Pride gelding to the lead and, from that point, had the race in the bag. Dawdling a clip of :28.3, :58 and 1:26.4, Saulsbrook Victor sprinted for home with his four rivals giving futile chase in progress to a 1-1/2-length victory, timed in 1:52.3. No Free Lunch rallied to take second with Wheels On Fire third, Sometime Somewhere fourth and Sintra rounding the quintet.
Trained by Ronald MacDonald for owner Brett MacDonald, Saulsbrook Victor won his 12th race from 48 starts and has now earned $227,885. He paid $4.70 to win.
Saturday’s card also featured two divisions of third-preliminary Pop-Up Series action. Beachin Lindy ($4.10 to win) took the first division going away by 2-3/4 lengths off a pocket ride in 1:52.3 with G A Speed Sammy snagging second and Arukidinme Cabbie third. Austin Sorrie engineered the winning drive on the eight-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding for owner-trainer Stephen Charlton.
I Ama Rocket ($20.60) burst through the field in the other division to land a head in front at the beam of a 1:53.3 mile. Travis Cullen drove the Jodie Cullen pupil to down Sun Chip in a blanket photo including Lovemyrockinbird in third and Hunter Hill in fourth. He also co-owns the seven-year-old Custard The Dragon gelding with J J J Stables and Paul Sanders.
