It was a busy afternoon Thursday at Woodbine Racetrack, as an eight-pack of qualifiers, highlighted by 2011 Horse of the Year San Pail, were contested.

Thursday’s qualifier was take-two for San Pail on his 2015 comeback trail. The Rod Hughes trainee finished third in a qualifier on January 5th, his first charted line in close to eight months.

In the afternoon’s fifth qualifier, San Pail and driver Randy Waples left from post five and got away early in third position, but would soon find themselves in second after a break by Theresademonime. The leader, Tymal Textme, posted an opening quarter of :29.2 and reached the half in 1:00.1. Down the backstretch, San Pail closed the gap between him and the leader and situated himself up close in the two-hole for the final turn.

After reaching the three-quarter pole in 1:30, Tymal Textme brought the field into the stretch with San Pail close in behind. In the stretch, Waples elected to stay along the rail and in the final eighth of the mile shot up the inside to get by Tymal Textme, who finished third, to score by three-quarters of a length over Joseph Gerard in 2:00.

Now 11-years-old, San Pail has banked over $3.1 million his career and has won 52 races. He is owned by Glenn Van Camp and Hughes Stable Inc.
