Hilldrop Shady was sent off at odds of 7-1 in Saturday’s $8,500 Preferred for pacers at Northlands Park, but he raced liked a 7-5 shot for driver Brent Grundy

.

The six-year-old son of Shady Character-Grecian Formula floated into the four-hole while Trust The Artist sped to the lead and supplied the field with early fractions of :28 and :58.4. Grundy had Hilldrop Shady out and rolling on the way to the mid-way point, and it didn’t take them long to clear to the top.

In fact, Hilldrop Shady had opened up a three-length lead on the field at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.3. He used a :29.1 final frame to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Sixdaysontheroad in 1:56.4. Neal Diamonique closed from out of the clouds to take home the show dough.

Ken Read trains the gelding for owner Wally McKay of Millet, AB, and together they watched the 19-time winner boost his lifetime earnings to $97,901 with the win.
