Hall of Fame driver Chris Christoforou has be sidelined after sustaining injuries in an accident on Sunday, Jan. 11 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The 54-year-old Campbellville, Ont. reinsman was unseated during an incident in the stretch of Sunday night's third race while driving Open trotter Safe Conduct when another horse hooked wheels with his sulky.
Christoforou's daughter Emma shared an update early Monday morning, reporting that her father was awaiting surgery for an ankle injury.
"His ankle is broke on both sides and the back as well as dislocated," said Emma Christoforou in a social media post. "He also has a fracture in his fibula."
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) Judges reported that Safe Conduct did run loose and was eventually caught with no further incident and that the horse was examined by the Official Veterinarian and reported to be “okay.”
Further updates on Chris Christoforou will be posted when available.
