Sudbury Purses Increase 30 Per Cent

Sudbury Downs general manager Ken Le Drew announced this morning that purses will increase by 30 per cent for the remainder of the 2008 season.

That will bring the track back to the pre-slots-strike purse schedule that had the track distributing and average of $66,000 per day.

Sudbury Downs races Wednesday and Saturday nights until November 19 and continues Saturdays until December 20. Then there is a break for Christmas and the track will race its final day of the live harness racing season on New Years Eve afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first race post time.

The track had to make major purse cuts this past summer while racing through the labour disruption at Sudbury's slot area. The disruption lasted nine weeks and had an estimated negative impact of more than $1 million on Sudbury's purse pool.
