Fraser Cancels New Year's Day Card

Published: December 31, 2008 06:40 pm EST

Live racing at Fraser Downs has been cancelled for tomorrow, January 1st, due to unsafe track conditions.

The limestone-based track has been frozen due to the unseasonably cold weather that has gripped Vancouver in recent weeks, and it has just started thawing in the last several days.

“We’ve had to cancel race days in previous seasons due to the track thawing, which turns the racing surface into a jelly-like substance, but we’ve never experienced a situation like this one where the frost has taken so long to come to the surface. Regrettably, this has resulted in the decision to cancel for tomorrow,” stated Chuck Keeling, General Manager of Fraser Downs.

A decision will be made at 9 a.m. on Friday morning to determine if racing can be conducted for the scheduled card that evening.
