Horseplayers Chase $25,000

The third annual Trot Canada National Handicapping Championship is set to go this Sunday night at Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa. Players from across the country will be vying for the title of Top Handicapper as well as the $25,000 grand prize

.

There is a broad array of players competing in this nationwide initiative. The field of 40 finalists includes players from coast to coast and all walks of life; from the 18-year-old student in Ontario to the funeral director from Saskatchewan to the retired Revenue Canada worker and the Casino Rama employee. They are all headed to Ottawa for the same reason: the chance to take home a $25,000 grand prize.

The Trot Canada Handicapping Championship is a nationwide initiative aimed at fans and horseplayers. Over a period of eight months, starting in March and ending last weekend, racetracks and industry organizations across Canada hosted qualifying events that enticed thousands of entrants. The championship is limited to players who earned their way in through a qualifying event at a racetrack, teletheatre and via online contests.

With a few players returning from previous editions, most of the faces for this championship will be new, including four female competitors. In addition there is a father and son that will be competing against each other!

Not everyone has a lucky charm, but of those who do, it seems that many of them will be bringing four leaf clovers with them. One handicapper noted that 'her husband' is her lucky charm -- so for her sake, let’s hope he makes the trip.

The championship will feature mythical wagers on 20 standardbred races from across Canada, and for the first time the championship will be run via the United Tote FastBet Wagering system at the track. The person with the highest bankroll at the end of the evening will take home the $25,000 prize. Cheques will also be issued for people finishing second through fifth with total prize money of $26,850.
