Red Mile To Propose $25M Expansion
It has been reported that documents have been filed with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission for a proposed $25 million renovation to the Red Mile in Lexington Kentucky.
A report by the Lexington Herald-Leader explains that the proposal calls for a renovation to at least part of the grandstand and the introduction of 500 ‘Instant Racing’ terminals, which are also known as ‘Historical Racing’ terminals.
The article states that the proposal calls for a 50,000-square-foot facility to be built, and that the facility would be open to the public by July of 2015.
The proposal is scheduled to be introduced before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Wednesday (April 2), the same day that a proposed expansion to Keeneland is also to be introduced.
The Lexington Herald-Leader report cites the Red Mile’s application as stating that the track is in "earnest negotiations" with the Kentucky Harness Horsemen's Association in regard to how much revenue from the Instant Racing machines will be directed to purses for live racing.
The article has cited the Red Mile’s application as saying, "The new revenue anticipated to be brought in from historical horse racing will prevent the Red Mile from going out of business and will enable the Red Mile to continue to support the viability of the Standardbred industry."
