Romano Wins O'Briens Contest
The I Love Canadian Harness Racing Fan Club would like to congratulate Derek Romano of Belleville, Ont., for winning the 2016 O’Brien Awards Online Handicapping Contest.
Romano scored 19 out of a possible 20, selecting 17 of the 18 categories correctly. He missed selecting Richard Moreau as Canada’s Trainer of the Year.
Derek has been involved in harness racing for most of his life. The former trainer and groom worked for Mark Steacy and Susie Kerwood. He also trained his own horses who raced at Quinte Raceway, Kawartha Downs, Rideau Carleton and Flamboro Downs. Although he hasn’t trained any horses in the last five years, he stays involved watching racing nightly and participating in the Fan Club’s contests.
Romano has won an I Love Canadian Harness Racing prize package as well as the choice of a $50 gift certificate to the Canadian harness racetrack of choice or a $50 donation to a registered Standardbred charity. Derek has chosen to donate to a registered Standardbred charity and has selected the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society.
