Speed Rules In Grand River Preferred
It was a ‘go to the front and don’t look back’ approach taken by driver Paul Davies with Outlawgrabbingears in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers, and it worked to perfection.
Davies put the pedal to the metal right from the outset with the gelding, and after carving out fractions of :27.1, :56.1 and 1:26 the leader then used a :28 closing quarter to win by a half-length margin over St Lads Beat It in 1:54. Third prize went to Illgetmyownthanks.
Outlawgrabbingears, who hangs his harness bag in Davies’ barn, is owned by Paul, his wife, Nicky, and Deborah Pinel of Calgary, AB.
The five-year-old son of Smart Shark-Grand Slam Woman is a six-time winner this season and a 28-time winner to date. He’s banked in excess of $335,000 to date.
Monday’s card also proved to be a profitable one for the duo of driver Colin Kelly and trainer Kyle Bossence, who celebrated five- and three-win performances respectively on the card.
Kelly and Bossence joined forces to win with A Black Diamond (1:56.1) in Race 1, U R Drivingme Nutz (1:56.2) in Race 5 and If You Knew Susie (1:56.4) in Race 8.
Wins with the Brian Maguire-trained LA Magic (1:59.4) in Race 4 and the Greg Campbell-trained Ajknight (1:56.1) in Race 9 bumped Kelly’s win total to five on the 10-race card.
Kelly has celebrated 59 wins over the Elora half-miler this season, and that’s 20 more than Brett MacDonald who holds down the second spot in the drivers’ standings in the 2021 season.
Bossence (23 wins) currently has a six-win lead over fellow trainer Gerard Demers (17 wins) in the trainers’ standings at the oval.
