Gerries Sport Sets Season's Mark
Gerries Sport became the season's first three-year-old to pace a sub-1:50 mile on Friday night, May 20 at Mohawk Racetrack with a lifetime-best performance in a $20,000 conditioned event.
Gerries Sport lowered the North American season's record for three-year-old pacers by one full second to 1:49.2 in the evening's seventh race for non-winners of three races or $75,000 lifetime.
Driven by Sylvain Filion, Gerries Sport tracked down 4-5 favourite Asap Hanover (Jody Jamieson), who had carved out panels of :26.3, :54.2 and 1:22.1. Gerries Sport sprinted home in :26.4 off a three-hole trip to win by two lengths. Asap Hanover stayed for second with Arsenic (Doug McNair) following in third. Mach Code (Trevor Henry) and Bettor Memories (Rick Zeron) earned the final paycheques in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Arsenic, Bettor Memories and seventh-place finisher Nocturnal Bluechip (Paul MacDonell), who also clocked a :26.4 final quarter closing from the back of the pack, are all eligible to the 2016 Pepsi North America Cup.
Gerries Sport paid $5.90 to win as the second wagering favourite in the 10-horse field.
An Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots winner at two, Gerries Sport is three-for-four in his sophomore season racing from the Richard Moreau stable. The homebred Mach Three-Perfect Sport colt now has six wins in 16 career starts and earnings totalling $71,453 for owner Gerrie Tucker of Montreal, Que.
