Trainer Pleads Guilty To ‘Rigging’ Races

It has been reported that a racehorse trainer in Pennsylvania has plead guilty to ‘rigging’ horse races by illegally administering pre-race drugs.

An article by pahomepage.com explains that on Wednesday, December 16, trainer David Wells, 50, plead guilty in county court to a charge of rigging publicly exhibited contests.

Wells trained Thoroughbred racehorses at Penn National Race Course in Pennsylvania and was one of the subjects involved in a 2013 federal probe relating to wrongdoing by racing participants that were based at the track.

The pahomepage.com report explains that when he plead guilty on Wednesday, Wells admitted to injecting illegally-administered drugs to racehorses while he was fully aware that his actions were in direct violation of the rules and regulations that were in place.

The article also states that Wells faces up to five years in jail and a $10,000 fine. Sentencing has been set for January 29, 2015.

Jail time instead of a slap on the wrist... that should help clean up what used to be an industry. I'm for it. A good reason to re-open back stretches again so there is some form of policing participants along with the obvious financial benefits of less stall rent and no shipping. This will never happen so long as track owners have leverage over OLG since no one else wants their casinos. Instead of increasing purses, cut expenses and level the playing field at the same time.
