Temporary Restraining Order In NJ

On Friday, October 24, a federal judge in the United States issued a temporary restraining order in favour of major sporting associations in relation to the legalization of sports wagering in the state of New Jersey.

Earlier this month, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation that reflected recent court rulings and removed prohibitions against sports wagering in New Jersey.

In turn, legal representation for the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball and the National Collegiate Athletic Association filed a lawsuit which seeked an injunction to block the legalization of sports wagering in the state. Then, just days later, the New Jersey Attorney General’s office, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and a group representing the state’s Thoroughbred horsepeople filed motions in regard to the Monmouth Park’s ability to offer legal wagering on sporting events effective this past Sunday (October 26).

On Friday (October 24), Judge Michael Shipp issued a temporary restraining order, and, according to an article by The New York Times, the leagues will be able to move forward with their lawsuit in an attempt to prevent the state from ever allowing legal sports wagering.
