Kennedy, Taylor On NPSE Situation
Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Commission Chairman Bruce Kennedy and Colchester County Mayor Bob Taylor have provided more feedback regarding the situation which has seen the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board call its loan to the NPSE Commission and thus take possession of the commission’s properties and assets, which includes Truro Raceway.
A report by the Truro Daily News has quoted Kennedy as praising the Provincial Government for its ongoing support of Truro Raceway.
The article has quoted Kennedy as saying, “…I was an advocate of the province having control. They put so much money over the years into this property and they contribute to harness racing a huge amount of money every year for purses for the horsemen to race for. And they're advocates for trying to sustain the viability of harness racing."
The report explains that Mayor Taylor is upset that the province called the loan. Colchester County Council recently voted 6-5 in favour of setting aside $500,000 and earmarking it for the possible purchase of the NPSE’s grounds and facilities.
"I don't know what the big deal was but he (Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell) felt that he should step in,” Mayor Taylor said. “I really think it is devastating for the community. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out now."
