Trainers Arrested, Charged In PA
It has been reported that a three trainers and a track employee in Pennsylvania have been arrested and charged by the United States Attorney’s Office with fraud relating to horse racing.
The news comes courtesy of a report by The Patriot News, which explains that thoroughbred trainers David Wells, 39, Sam Webb, 63, and Patricia Anne Rogers, 43, have been charged individually for three separate incidents at Penn National Racetrack in Grantville, PA.
In addition to the trainers, a clocker at the track, Danny Robertson, 63, has been charged in relation to submitting false workout times for personal profit.
The Patriot News article cites a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
In regard to Webb, the press release states that in May of 2013 he was caught at the track preparing to inject a horse that was scheduled to race later that day with medication. In regard to Rogers, the press release states she was observed at the track injecting or attempting to inject a substance into one of her horses that was scheduled to race later that day. In regard to Wells, the press release states he routinely injected prohibited substances into his horses, and that he routinely had prohibited items while at the racetrack.
The report states that the trainers have been charged with allegedly devising a scheme to defraud those betting on thoroughbred races at Penn National Racetrack.
The article states each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. The report also states that Rogers faces an additional 20-year term and quarter-million-dollar fine if she is convicted of an additional charge.
