Weatherbie Trainees Dominate Red Shores Feature
Tom Weatherbie trainees recorded a 1-2 finish in the $3,500 feature pace on the Saturday, June 1 race card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Fern Hill General, with Brodie MacPhee up, got up to nip stablemate Island Beach Boy and driver Gilles Barrieau in the stretch by a nose in 1:55.1. Making his second start of the year, the seven-year-old Malicious gelding earned his first trip to the winner’s circle of 2024. Fern Hill General is owned by Peter Smith of Stratford, P.E.I., and Gerald Morrissey of Charlottetown.
Howmac Powerball provided the upset of the night. With driver Corey MacPherson aboard, the three-year-old gelding posted a 1:59 win at 17-1 odds, helping to create a $983.10 triactor ticket in a $2,600 pace. JD Racing Inc. of Cornwall, P.E.I. shares ownership of the winning son of Pang Shui with Atlantic Racing Power Group of Warren Grove, P.E.I., and Stewart MacDonald of Charlottetown.
MacPhee and Weatherbie combined to score earlier on the card when Shanes Dream posted a maiden-breaking score of 1:59.1 in the third race. Driver Brady Sweet and trainer Jeff Holmes teamed up for a pair of wins with Imalookertoo (1:56.2) in the sixth race and Elroy Shiner (1:59.2) in the ninth race.
