Gov. Christie Signs Bill; $30 Million To N.J. Racing Over Three Years
According to an article in the Tuesday, February 1 edition of The Philadelphia Examiner, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed the Atlantic City Tourism District Bill on Tuesday thus extending supplemental purse money for New Jersey Racing
.
The supplement will be spread out over a three-year period, with $15 million for 2011, another $10 million in 2012 and $5 million in 2013. The supplement will come from the Atlantic City casinos in lieu of the installation of slot machines at New Jersey racetracks.
“This is money much needed in the state toward horse racing purses and it puts horse racing a step closer to being self sufficient,” said Tom Luchento, Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. “The horse racing industry really needs this leg up. It’s a small price to pay to keep the horse racing industry and all the ancillary horse-related and farming businesses alive in the state of New Jersey.”

This is no small mercy - could have pulled the plug. Meadowlands is already at the leading edge of reform with reduced rakes, now a three year plan to be self sufficient... can only hope their competition gets the same ultimatum or hopefully harsher. Pull the plug, if it has the will, it will live.
