'Cup' Eligible Debuts At Mohawk Qualifiers
A compact, six-race qualifying session went forward this morning at Mohawk Racetrack with a 40-1 shot in Trot Magazine's Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book making his 2010 charted debut
.
The card's second race saw three-year-old Modern Art filly Racy Gal Hanover fire out from mid pack on the final turn and pace to a three quarters of one length victory for driver Mario Baillargeon and trainer Ben Baillargeon in 1:56.3. The win came over the NA Cup-eligible BP Chimo, who was making his aforementioned '10 charted debut.
With his trainer James Barton in the racebike, BP Chimo, a son of Grinfromeartoear, sat at the back of the field in sixth through the opening half (:57.1). Barton sent the colt overland on the final turn and the bay was in the hunt right to the wire.
BP Chimo, who was just a $10,000 yearling buy, made 11 starts last year at two and paced to five on-the-board finishes, three of which were victories. He lowered his mark to 1:53.4 at Mohawk in an Ontario Sires Stakes elimination. The colt proved to be game in his season-ending OSS Super Final at Woodbine Racetrack, as he was sharp duking it out on the front end. He would eventually finish one length back in second in the dash, which was won by a closing Code Word in 1:51.3.
The other victorious horses during the Monday morning qualifying session were Scotty Doesnt Know (1:59.2), Friendly Amigo (1:58.1), Emerald Lexus (1:58), With Anticipation (1:56.1) and Flora Dream (1:57.2).
