Accident Sidelines Gilles Barrieau
Trot Insider has learned that top Maritime horseman Gilles Barrieau will be sidelined for the foreseeable future after an on-track accident that occurred last weekend.
Barrieau was driving at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino last Saturday (Oct. 9) and was involved in an accident in the fourth race. Barrieau was driving Saulsbrook Raptor, who made a break heading into the first turn and interfered with Atufflittleguy, driven by Hilliard Graves. Both drivers were unseated in the spill but were up and walking after being checked out by medical staff while the horses reportedly walked off the track in good health.
In the spill, Barrieau was thrown from the sulky and he told Trot Insider that he broke a bone in his heel and his foot. He has an appointment with an arthroscopic surgeon next week but the initial prognosis for recovery will be roughly two months.
Barrieau will likely need to colour coordinate his crutches and cast with a different style of suit in one week's time as the decorated horseman adds another accolade to his accomplished resume. The 'Maritime Magic Man' is one of eight 2021 inductees to the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame, with that ceremony slated for Saturday, Oct. 23.
