Ohio Sires Stakes Championships On Tap

The Ohio Sires Stakes Championships will be contested this weekend at both Eldorado Scioto Downs and MGM Northfield Park.

On Saturday night (Sept. 4), Scioto Downs will host four $85,000 Ohio Sires Stakes contests for older horses, while on Sunday night (Sept. 5), Northfield will host eight $300,000 Championships for two- and three-year-olds.

Among the older horses set to compete at Scioto Downs are fan favourites such as Penpaperpaige, a $380,701 earner, in the pacing mares division, while the male pace includes former OHSS champions and contestants Bllack Hole, Gold Digger King, Sectionline Bigry and Ocean Rock, who have combined earnings of nearly $2 million.

In the trotting ranks, million-dollar earners Mission Accepted and I Know My Chip head the championship for older horses and geldings, while the distaff trotting final features recent $100,000 Aldrich winner Weslynn Quest and former OHSS champs Kikimora and Pure Chance.

Horses to watch in the two-year-old championships at Northfield include Caviar Gold and Gabbys Big Coin, who are tied with $50,000 in OHSS earnings after both winning two legs. These two face off in the rookie colt and gelding trotting final (race nine). In the two-year-old filly trotting championship (race seven), stablemates Gabbys C Note, Caviar Roxie Due and Stephanie Hill — who finished first, second and third in the OHSS standings — are all going postward. The two-year-old colt pacing championship features Sling Shock and Gulf Shores — both winners of three legs — in race four, while among the freshmen pacing fillies, fans will witness the undefeated six-time winner Sea Silk try to defend her crown from post eight against three-time OHSS leg winner and stablemate Cape Cod Hanover, who leaves from the rail, in race eight.

Three-Year-old trotters who bear watching include two-time OHSS leg winner Celebrate With Me, who starts from post seven in race two, while Winning Ticket, undefeated in 2021, heads up the colt championship (race 12) as the winner of $100,000 in OHSS dollars via his victories in all four OHSS legs. The outstanding Charlie May, a winner of $753,477 to date, and winner of three OHSS legs — two in 1:49.3 — leads the sophomore pacing colt Championship from post two (race 10), while Summer Touch and Dragons Lucky Lady — both winners of three OHSS legs — square off in the three-year-old filly pace championship (race six).
