Savard Scores A Pair Of Awards
"Arthur Blue Chip could have been the best ever, we don't know. He didn't race as a three-year-old and he's at stud right now, but that's the way it is. But [Percy Bluechip], she really looked like him and we were very confident from day one and she didn't disappoint us."
Trot Insider caught up with NHL Hall of Famer Serge Savard after the longtime Standardbred horse owner took home a pair of trophies at the 2017 O'Brien Awards Black Tie Gala on Saturday, February 3 in Mississauga, Ont.
Percy Bluechip, Canada’s Two-Year-Old Pacing Filly of the year is co-owned by Savard and trainer Dr. Ian Moore, who also managed her sire Shadow Play as well as her brother, 2013 O'Brien Award winner Arthur Blue Chip. Percy Bluechip scored five wins in nine races on the season and racked up more than $440,000 in earnings. In addition to four wins in Ontario Sires Stakes events, including the season-ending Super Final, the talented filly also posted a wire-to-wire victory in the Eternal Camnation at Mohawk Racetrack.
Another son of Shadow Play, Classic Pro was the winner in the three-year-old pacing colt division, with Moore and Savard again teaming on the ownership. Classic Pro won four of 14 starts and earned more than $293,000 on the season. Two of those wins were in Ontario Sires Stakes events and one of those gave the sophomore colt his mark of 1:51.
These two stablemates have resumed training for 2018, with Savard providing an update on both as well as reflections on their respective award-winning 2017 campaigns.
