November's Calendar Photographer
Evelyn Sabraw of Acme, Alta., is the Heart of Harness Racing’s November photographer. Sabraw captured this image of Mannart Talia at Whispering Willow Acres.
Sabraw works full-time at Greatwest Kenworth as a warranty analyst. She has eight horses and two minis as a 'hobby', and also dabbles in photography.
In 2007, she was introduced to Standardbreds when she purchased “Truce” as a trail horse. This past season, she assisted Connie Kolthammer at Century Downs in Balzac, and was also one of Standardbred Canada’s photographers for the first leg of the World Driving Championship.
Sabraw isn’t new to SC’s photography challenges; she is a regular contributor to the Fan Club’s annual Heart of Harness Racing Calendar and also enters the monthly Zoom contests. This year another one of her great images was chosen as the Heart of Harness Racing’s February image, and she was the winner of the May Zoom contest featuring Mares & Foals with a shot of her foal, Rip It Up.
As for her formal photography training, Sabraw took some workshops in 2016. “I still wish I had more time to practice but luckily I have my own horses and there's always an opportunity to snap some photos!”
Evelyn and her husband Marc have owned retired Standardbreds for many years but when they were offered the opportunity to acquire a broodmare in January of last year, they didn't hesitate.
“We had our first (hopefully) race horse born in April. Rip It Up is no stranger to Standardbred Canada: he won the Foal zoom contest! In the meantime we have added a weanling filly to our herd as well as two more broodmares.” explained Sabraw.
”I’m crazy hooked on the breed and hopefully we’ll see one of ours at the track in the future!”
