Fred And Ginger Passes

Fred And Ginger, a world record-setting pacer who earned $1.05 million in his career, passed Monday (May 31) at Farriers Acres Farm in Illinois, where he was standing as a stallion, the horse’s former owner Howard Taylor said. Fred And Ginger was 14.

A son of Real Artist out of Graceful Motion, Fred And Ginger was the younger full brother of millionaire mare Ginger And Fred. He won 26 of 89 lifetime starts, with his most lucrative victory coming in 2010 at age three in the $300,000 Max C. Hempt Memorial at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.

Another memorable triumph came in a preliminary round of the 2013 TVG Series at The Meadowlands, where Fred And Ginger defeated future Hall of Famer Sweet Lou by a head in a world record 1:47.3. The field also included Modern Legend, Pet Rock, Dancin Yankee, Golden Receiver, Warrawee Needy and Bettors Edge.

In addition, Fred And Ginger won a division of the 2010 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes in 1:48.4 at The Meadows, setting the track’s all-age record. He finished second to Rock N Roll Heaven in both the 2010 Breeders Crown and Berry’s Creek.

Fred And Ginger was trained for the majority of his career by Ron Burke. He was bred by Ronald Mersky.

“It’s very sad news,” Taylor said. “He was such a good horse. When he won in (1):47, it was like a who’s who of horses that he beat. I couldn’t believe it. That was the best field he beat. There were some top-top horses in there. That would be his best race and my best memory. But he beat a real good field when he won the Hempt. I consider Pocono my home track, so when he won the Hempt, I was going nuts.”

As a stallion, Fred And Ginger’s top earner to date is Shnitzledosomethin, who finished second in the 2017 Breeders Crown for two-year-old male pacers and has banked $854,983 in his career.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Fred And Ginger.
