WEG Announces Second Pick 4; Pick 7 To Be Removed

Woodbine Entertainment Group is adding a second Pick 4 to its standardbred wagering profile beginning

on Saturday, September 5.

WEG currently offers a single Pick 4 on its standardbred product (Races 4 through 7) and it has proven to be one of the most popular nightly wagers. WEG management felt that with the success of the current Pick 4 and the customer demand for more, a late Pick 4 was a natural.

"The Pick 4 in Race 4 has been a staple of our wagering profile," said Sean Pinsonneault, WEG vice president, Wagering Services. "Our customers have indicated that they want more so we decided to add the late Pick 4 on the last four races of the card."

The Pick 4 has produced significant payoffs (for a $1 bet) during the current Mohawk meet, such as $25,031.35 payout on May 9, $11,764.50 on August 6 and $10,194.85 on June 8.

With the addition of the second Pick 4 (available when 11 or more races are carded), the Pick 7 wager will be removed from the wagering menu and will conclude with a mandatory payout on Friday, September 4.

The September 5 card will spotlight some of the country's biggest harness races, with the $1 million Metro Pace, $700,000 editions of the Canadian Pacing Derby and Shes A Great Lady Pace.

"WEG is committed to offering its wagering customers the best product possible and the timing is right with this great card of racing to introduce this new betting opportunity for our players," said Pinsonneault.

Technology in my opinion has ruined this game for the serious gambler.

Re-runs of races from seven days ago, professional handicappers such as Mike Hamilton and the folks on 123 Racing picking horses for the public and daily shows discussing the horses racing in each race gives the public or uneducated gambler the opportunity to be on the same playing field as the punter who goes to the qualifiers, watches replays and does his homework.

It's great for the public but it sucks for the people who have tried to make a living this way. The faces have certainly changed in the last ten years.

To John Cherry: I couldn't diagree with you more. The $.20 Superfecta and win fours has allowed the average bettor the opportunity to take advantage of the possibility of significant leverage with a minimal cost. A wheel with one key horse on top of five horses would cost $60 with a $1 bet whereas the same bet at $.20 is $12. This is exactly what the betting public is looking for and I am sure if you look at the handle numbers you will find the stats reveal the handles are up because of this. This bet is actually a fantastic bet for the average bettor as you can be wrong a lot and still make money if you are wagering on superfectas where big leverage exists (don't chase small potential rewards).

Mike, I know all the regular punters that are at the track nightly and not one of them prefers the .20 cent bets. We are all either not playing those wagers or are significantly reducing the amounts we are wagering. I used to wager 750-1000 into every pick 4, now the number is zero.Multiply that number by 12 to 15 guys and you do the math. Often on races 5-7 the pick3 is paying 2 out 3, but on races 4-7, the pick4 is always covered....lol. I chased the pick6 at Saratoga this week, investing about $7,500 trying to get the 1.5 million payout. It's a $2 wager, and after 3 carry overs the pool built to 1.5 million plus. There are now no wagers offered at the harness tracks that would get a true punter excited. Now that they offer 2 pick4's, why don't they make one of them a minimum $1 or $2 wager? You and I could have a side wager on which pool would have the higher handle. I'm all in, you?

Until track takeout is drastically reduced these types of moves are meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

IVE NOTICED THAT SARATOGA HAS REDUCED TAKEOUT TO 16% ON PICK6 WAGERING.. AND GET LOTS OF ACTION DAILY..MAYBE WEG COULD LEARN FROM OTHER MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL TRACKS?

Race tracks across NA have no idea what they are doing. They are not in touch with their customers and have continued to make numerous mistakes in my opinion. I have been wagering at woodbine for over 30 years and if Sean Pisonneault walked passed me, as far as I know, he could be the queen of England? My handle has dropped by more than 50 percent due to the various types of wagers that are now available. The .20 cent wagers have ruined the superfecta bet and the pick 4. Now they do away with the pick 7, but they have no problem with these type of wagers with simucasting? Very sad outlook for the future of racing in my opinion. I've been buying natural gas, and like the harness handle, I don't think they have bottemed yet!

Great idea but they should also add a Pick 6 (now that the pick 7 is gone) similiar to the one at the Meadowlands - where 5 of 6 gets a payout - even if someone picks 6 of 6.
Their big payout (at the Meadowlands) 2 or 3 months ago generated alot of interest!
