Eleven pacing fillies from this year’s freshmen class went postward in Thursday’s lone elimination for this year’s Whenuwishuponastar Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack, with the top ten finishers advancing to next Monday’s final
.
Shelliscape toted a 2-for-2 record into the $20,000 affair, and she went home a perfect 3-for-3 thanks to a narrow score from off the pace for the tandem of driver Randy Waples and trainer Bob McIntosh.
Waples was in no hurry with the daughter of Artiscape-Shell I Scott, who was eighth as the field zipped past the quarter pole. Shes Astronomical was the leader at that juncture in :27.3, and she was still in charge through middle panels of :57.4 and 1:26.1. Shelliscape, who was sixth and three-wide at the three-quarter pole, uncorked a :26.3 final frame en route to posting the narrow victory over Angel Scent in 1:53.4. Big Mcdeal raced well to finish third.
“I prefer racing them from off-the-pace if it’s going to work out that way,” said Waples, following the win. “It just seemed like there was only a few leaving, but it looked like she was going to get away in the middle of the pack. I was cool with that.
“When the half flashed up in :57.4, that was a little bit discouraging,” he added. “The flow kept going forward so that helped and she was dragged into it four, five lengths out of it at the three-quarter pole so basically she had a second to make up. I’m not going to say that it’s easy for her, but definitely was within her reach.”
Robert McIntosh Stables Inc, C S X Stables and DM Stables LLC share ownership on the career winner of $27,000. She was purchased from $25,000 from last year’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale.

First off, I'm a big fan of standarbreds out of,"Direct Scooter", mares. And ,"Shelliscape", look to be one of the better ones. She never saw the wood, and the pace-setters got away with a,"soft", 30 & 1, 2nd quarter. Those two facts didn't deter, "Shelliscape", who refused to be denied. She ,"easily", swooped by the field thru the 3rd quarter, and then smoked home in 26 & change,...... under wraps at the wire. A ,"powerfull", performance from a "force to be reckoned with"!
