OHRIA, ORC Discuss Stake Payments

Published: April 3, 2012 06:14 pm EDT

The Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association (OHRIA) recognizes the Ontario breeding industry is the first sector of the industry negatively impacted by the cancellation of the Slots at Racetracks Program by the Ontario Government

.

OHRIA has communicated to the Government that their sudden shift of direction for the horse racing and breeding in Ontario and the cancellation of the agreement has caused serious repercussions within our industry.

OHRIA is working with the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) to establish a new date for Standardbred yearling nominations for stakes such as the Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS). We understand that any delay decreases the credibility of the Ontario breeding programs and ultimately the horse racing industry. We have requested the ORC immediately begin consultation with the Breed Advisory Groups to define the scope and criteria of programs to insure the long term viability of a breeding industry in Ontario.

OHRIA continues to impress upon the Government the extent of the damage occurring daily within the breeding industry and the economy ofOntario as a result of the cancellation of the program. We will continue to do so until we obtain a satisfactory resolution for the horse racing and breeding industry.

Well here we go again. In my previous post I talked about the effect on horse racing in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Newbrunswick. I did not talk about the breeding industry.. Well here is a scenario that I feel needs to be addressed and I believe that an effective way is for the owners of the premises Flamboro, Goergian Downs, Sudbury, Fort Erie, Windsor, Kiawartha Downs, and Rideau Carlten to get together and inform the OLG that they have 24 hours to get their machines off the premises. They have cancelled the agreement that was for another 3 years 2015. So why not put the pressure back on the Ontario Government. See how they feel without slot machine revenue for the year. I know this hurts the breeding and racing industry but why not take some pain early.

The other thing they can do is close the casinos at the tracks and only have horse racing. They have destroyed your life anyway and eye for an eye.

I agree with Ken, but would suggest they get to together and give the slots an ultimatum, either keep the slots and carry on with the old system, which not only benefitted the horse people but also the local community OR tell them we don't want your slots in our community so remove them and don't bring them back .I am assuming that Woodstock will be one of the next towns to hear the bad news and then possibly Grand River, two communities that have benefitted from their share of slot revenue.

Right on Ken! This was the first thing that came to mind when we all got blind-sided by the news. The government will use you when it is convenient and drop you like a hot potato when it suits them. Everyone should boycott the slots. We should support the Racetracks instead. Chris
