ORC Meets With Industry Figures

It has been reported that on Monday, October 28 industry stakeholders met with officials from the Ontario Racing Commission in regard to some aspects of the future of horse racing in the province.

An article by the Chatham Daily News states that the raceways that were not specifically outlined in the Ontario Government’s five-year plan for the industry will have a chance to share in approximately $8-million a year to continue operating. Tracks must first submit a business plan before they would be in a position to receive any of the funds.

The report has cited Hiawatha Horse Park owner Jim Henderson, who took part in the meeting, as saying that the $8-million would include purse money.

“If you took purses out of that, then there's a couple million dollars left,” Henderson was quoted as saying.

“If you divide that out, some of the tracks were doing some math there today (at the meeting) and said, 'That won't cover the stone dust for the tracks.'”

All stakeholders should have banded with the horsemen and asked to have slots removed immediately. It wouldn't have happened because it would have cost the Province too much to do that and they would have lost all that revenue for at least a year. So sad.
