Giving Back To The Community
On Saturday, January 21, the team at Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino, along with the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association (ASHA), proudly presented a cheque for $2,000 to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
The funds were raised as a result of one horse’s (Outlawburntpopcorn) winning ways this season during the Standardbred racing season at Northlands Park.
“We had hoped to raise more money,” said Scott Sinclair, the director of gaming for Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino. “That said, we are proud to contribute to a community partner and one many of us hold close to the heart.”
Fred Gillis, the executive director of ASHA, approached Northlands Park in the hope it would partner in efforts to raise funds for a local community partner.
“We started the Fun for Fans project six years ago when I had the idea to give back to the communities we raced in,” Gillis stated. “We continue this program because it is the right thing to do and we thank all of our partners (Horse Racing Alberta, Northlands, Century Downs, Meridian Farms and ASHA) for working with us and making it a reality. Horse Racing is a close family and when we can work together we accomplish great things.”
With the continuation of racing on the Northlands site until June 2018, those involved in this initiative will continue to look for opportunities such as this to give back to the community and thank those who support horse racing in Alberta.
