Phone Terror Dashes To Open Win
Phone Terror ($4.30) brushed to command on the backstretch and paced away in the snowy conditions to win Sunday afternoon's featured $10,500 Fillies & Mares Open at Fraser Downs.
Driven by three-time Sunday winner Serge Masse, Phone Terror settled fourth in the line-up off the gate from post five while Part Time Lady (Paul Davies) gunned out from the outside six-hole to establish the early lead over insider Mysterious Lady (Dennis Johnston). However, Goldies Mach (John Chappell), parked from post four, drove on through the :28.1 opening quarter to take over in front of the grandstand and then proceeded to the half in :59.4. Masse made his move with Phone Terror on backside and the even-money favourite swept to command by the 1:28.1 third quarter mark and opened up two and a half lengths turning for home, closing out her 1:56 victory with a :27.4 final frame over the frozen track. Goldies Mach and Part Time Lady finished second and third, respectively.
Masse trains the daughter of Western Terror and Miss Lex, who notched her second win in a row and fifth on the year from 24 starts, for owner Lucy Raymond of Edmonton, Alta. The seven-year-old mare now boasts 45 victories lifetime and earnings of nearly $475,000.
