Lucy Lucy Sets Tioga Track Record
Jimmy Marohn Jr. and Lucy Lucy established a new track record of 1:52 in the $13,000 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace on Saturday night at Tioga Downs
.
The duo sat through fractions of :27.3, :55.4 and 1:23.1 being pulled into the race with second-over cover from Kevin Hough and Bikini Bottom. Marohn asked Lucy Lucy for more at the top of the stretch and kicked three-wide off cover to win by a length.
Bikini Bottom and Kevin Hough hung on for second, while the 1-5 betting favourite Paper Cut and Howard Parker could only manage a third place finish.
The mile of 1:52 established a track record for aged pacing mares at Tioga Downs, but also established a new life mark for Lucy Lucy. The win was part of a driving triple on the night’s eleven race card for leading driver Jimmy Marohn Jr.
The five-year-old Tough Sir-Small Change mare is trained by leading trainer Michael Deters for Jay Sears of Osteen, Florida. It was the fourth win in 15 seasonal starts for Lucy Lucy with earnings now at more than $36,000 in 2009.
Real Yankee fresh off of his claim for owner-trainer-driver Phil Fluet also established another track record on the night. The mile of 1:10.3 was a new track record for the five-eighth’s mile dash at Tioga Downs.
