Standouts Recognized At Symposium
Pierre 'Peb' Bellocq, a famed cartoonist well-known and respected in the Thoroughbred industry, received the Clay Puett Award from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program on Tuesday for a lifetime contributions to racing. His artwork displays his grasp of racing and his puckish sense of humour.
Accepting the award for Bellocq, who was unable to travel to Tucson, was racing executive and former RTIP student and director Lonny Powell.
The John K. Goodman Alumni Award for the outstanding alumni of the RTIP went to Jim Mulvihill, director of media and industry relations for the NTRA.
The RTIP Distinguished Student Award went to Erin Doty-McQuaid, a native of northern California who fell in love with racing and enrolled at the University of Arizona to get a head start in a career in Thoroughbred racing.
The Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP) recognized two veteran stewards, Peter Kosiba, Jr. and Cal Rainey, with the Pete Pedersen Award for lifetime contributions to racing.
ROAP chairman Hugh Gallagher described Kosiba as a “legend” and said that Rainey’s contributions as an official are “immeasurable.”
Working stewards recognized with ROAP awards on Tuesday were Jerry Burgess, Michael Corey, and Dennis Nevin.
