Tortola Sunrise Trots To Preferred Win
Tortola Sunrise ($10.80) rebuffed a challenge from the 5-2 favourite to win the $7,500 Preferred 3 Trot on Saturday night (November 19) at Flamboro Downs for the husband and wife, driving and training duo of Anthony and Amy MacDonald.
Tortola Sunrise overtook outside leaver Spartan Victory (Ryan Holliday) through a :28.3 opener and kept first-over challenger Can I Say (Alfie Carroll) at bay through middle splits of 1:00.4 and 1:29.4 while a three-wide Seeyou Men (Robert Shepherd) broke stride on the final turn. After turning back Can I Say, Tortola Sunrise prevailed by one and a half lengths in a final time of 2:00 over the "good" track. Euro Classic (Per Henriksen) came on for second while Spartan Victory followed in the pocket for third. Angels Kid (J Harris), the longest shot on the board at 20-1, rallied from last to overtake Can I Say.
The four-year-old Muscle Massive-Weather Bird gelding earned his fifth win of the year from 33 races and lifted his seasonal earnings to $61,355 for owner Darryl Newbigging of Komoka, Ont. The victory was his second in his last three starts this month -- with both winning efforts over Flamboro Downs.
