Demers Sweeps Rideau Features
Rideau Carleton Raceway's season-leading trainer Gerard Demers swept Sunday's co-featured Winners Over Handicap events as part of a three-win night.
Unabating ($2.10) and Guy Gagnon fired out to the lead from the outside post six and went wire-to-wire to win the $6,500 top trot in 1:58 for Demers and then sophomore gelding Hp Patriote ($23.90) pulled off a 10-1 upset in the $6,650 pacing division, advancing from mid-pack after the hot early pace to prevail by half a length over the fast-closing Meersburg in 1:54 with Louis Philippe Roy in the sulky. Both Unabating and Hp Patriote have won 13 races this year.
Beach Boy ($11.10) later won his first start from the Demers stable in a $6,500 claiming pace with Gagnon driving.
Demers' training triple pushed his 2016 Rideau win count to 84 while Sebastien Giroux sent out back-to-back winners on Sunday to move himself out of a tie for second-place in the standings -- now with 52 wins -- ahead of Chelsea Knapp.
