Painted Desert Wins; Title To Campbell
Painted Desert, under the command of Adam Merner, rallied in deep stretch to win the final feature of the season on Sunday (October 30) at Red Shores Summerside.
The longshot paid $87.30 to win. Motorino (Terry Gallant) was second by a nose while Rash B Havior (Marc Campbell) was third. Painted Desert is owned by Perry Burke pf Grosse-Ile, Que. and trained by Phil Sizer. The time of the mile was 2:00.3.
Marc Campbell earned the top spot in the driver’s standings with 39 victories during the 2016 campaign. Campbell went into the last program with 35 scores and won with Instant Shadow in race four for trainer Sifroi Melanson and came back in the eighth race with PC Shockwave for owner/trainer Clair Sweet of O’Leary, P.E.I. Campbell gave The Ultimate Stable and Melanson an owner/trainer triple with a driving hat-trick aboard Ultimatelyhandsome. The Winsloe, P.E.I. native hit a grand-slam with Jetster, owned by Ralph Sweet of O’Leary, to capture the driver’s title and the Isabelle & Ivan Cameron Memorial.
Jason Hughes, who finished second in the standings, rallied with OK Galahad, owned by Foxyhall Hall racing of Summerside, P.E.I. and Robi Hughes of Stratford, P.E.I., to complete the season with 35 wins while Ken Murphy was third with 33.
Terry Gallant will named the top trainer at the Prince County oval with 18 winners from his stable in 2016.
Driver Dale Spence recorded a driving double on the program.
