Campbell, Jamieson Shine At Truro
It was another super Sunday for trainer/driver Marc Campbell at Truro Raceway as he swept the Maritime Breeders Stakes finals amidst a five-win performance. Meanwhile, visiting driver Jody Jamieson racked up five wins of his own during the October 23 program while giving Campbell a run for his money in stakes action.
Campbell steered Filly Forty Seven ($8.70) wire-to-wire in the $27,800 two-year-old pacing filly final, with stablemate Elektra Express, driven by Jamieson, finishing half a length behind in second.
After leading through fractions of :28.1, :58.2, 1:28.4, Filly Forty Seven rebuffed her pocket-pulling rival Kinda Like Her (Corey MacPherson) and then held off Elektra Express as she charged home off a three-hole trip. Woodmere Dreams (Gilles Barrieau) finished one length behind in third.
Filly Forty Seven now boasts wins in half of her 12 starts and $52,216 in career earnings. The Proven Lover-This Marks A Lady filly, who is also this year's Atlantic Breeders Crown champion, is owned by Darryl Maclean of Winsloe, P.E.I., Katelyn Smallwood of Stratford, P.E.I., Cory Carver of Montague, P.E.I., and Tanya Tremblett of Sydney Mines, N.S. Bred by Wendell Williams of Ellerslie, P.E.I., she was an $8,000 yearling purchase at the Atlantic Classic Sale. Elektra Express is owned and was bred by Danica Ellis of Brookfield, N.S.
Campbell also persevered with Nameisonthehalter ($17) in the $29,000 two-year-old pacing colt final after a stretch duel with Mighty Cowboy and Jamieson.
Woodmere Soul (Gilles Barrieau) was the early leader through fractions of :28 and :58.2 with The Hawk (Danny Romo) parked and pressing. Campbell moved Nameisonthehalter second-over approaching the midway mark and then fanned three-wide down the backstretch to take the lead by 1:29.3 third quarter mark. Meanwhile, Jamieson maneuvered Mighty Cowboy out from the pocket following Nameisonthehalter wide in pursuit. Those two raced head-to-head past the seven-eighths mark and took off from the rest of the field in a stretch duel to the wire, with Nameisonthehalter ultimately prevailing by a neck for the 1:59.3 victory. Complete Player (Mark Bradley) rounded out the top three finishers.
Nameisonthehalter now boasts eight wins from 15 career starts and a bankroll totalling $46,101. The Brandons Cowboy-Keltic Sarah gelding is owned and trained by Lawrence Snow of Glace Bay, N.S. and was bred by Douglas Rankin of Sydney, N.S.
Jamieson also had success in the afternoon's stakes events, picking up the winning catch-drive in the $10,065 Nova Scotia Stake for three-year-old pacing colts. He drove P H Blackjack ($5.50) to a career-best 1:59.2 victory, prevailing from the pocket and defeating the popular pacesetter Preceptor and Paul Langille by three and a half lengths. The Mantorious-My Fine Lady gelding earned his first win of the year for trainer William McNeil and owners Edward Gorc of Sudbury, Ont. and Mike Brealey of Hamilton, Ont.
Jamieson's other winners were Grins Little Flirt ($3.20) for trainer George Rennison, Chief Exec Officer ($5) for Tammy Lynn MacKay, Surrealist ($3.80) for Richard Mullins and Charlottes Style ($3.40) for Devin O'Connor. Surrealist's 1:58 victory in the top conditioned pace was his 10th in a row and 50th lifetime. The 10-year-old gelding is owned by Dana Getto of New Waterford, N.S.
Campbell also scored victories with Djs Kocakolacowboy ($5.90) for Henry Smallwood, Oppies Lifes Line ($5.70) for Joseph Poirier and Dinger Two ($15.10) for Rennison. Oppies Lifes Line's victory in her Truro debut in the afternoon's third race was followed up by her half-brother Oppies Artist winning the very next race to give local horseman Paul Treves his first career training and driving win.
Total handle for the 13-race card was a season-high $27,232.
