Carroll Sweeps Preferreds
Front-stepping scores were turned in by Canadian Edition and Rainbow Gold in their respective Preferred events Monday evening at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and that was music the ears of the favourite players.
Canadian Edition fired to the front from Post 1 for driver Alfie Carroll in the $7,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers, and after slicing out panels of :28.1, :58.2 and 1:26.2 he finished off the competition with a closing quarter clocked in :29.4. The five-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere-A Fiesty Affair stopped the clock in 1:56.1, and in doing so defeated Rock N Roll Legacy by 1-1/2 lengths. Third prize was earned by Markathy.
Sent off as the 3-2 choice, Canadian Edition posted his second consecutive win for trainer Victor Puddy. The 16-time winner, who is owned by Keith Cassell of Smiths Falls, Ont., pushed his lifetime earnings to $109,693 with the victory.
Carroll came right back to win the $7,500 Preferred 3 for trotters in the very next race with Rainbow Gold, who went coast-to-coast in 1:58.1. Carroll hustled the 2-5 favourite to the top from Post 3 and she whacked out fractions of :28.1, :59.2 and 1:28.4 before storming home in :29.2 to win by 8-1/4 lengths over Conway Escape. Massive Muscles was third.
Ashley Duford trains the nine-year-old son of Thunder Road-Incredible Gold for Dennis Duford of Dresden, Ont. The gelding, who is 7-for-19 this year, is now a 40-time winner in his career. The classy campaigner has stashed away $217,023 to date.
