2016 Lexington Sale Wraps Up
The 2016 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale concluded on Saturday, Oct. 8 after 573 yearlings were sold over five sessions throughout the week at the Fasig-Tipton Pavilion in Lexington, Kentucky.
The 2016 yearling sale grossed $32,262,000 over five days, with the average price up from last year at $56,304. Last year's sale was comprised of 642 yearlings that sold for $29,031,000, producing an average price of $45,220.
The highest priced yearling from Saturday's fifth and final session was Romantic Interest, Hip 597. The only yearling sired by Always A Virgin in the sale, Romantic Interest was purchased for $110,000 from the Preferred Equine Inc. consignment by Irwin Samelman of Las Vegas, Nevada. The colt out of the Cambest mare My Best Girl is a full brother to two-year-old Air Strike (1:51.4 - $53,200), a recent Indiana Sires Stakes winner, as well as a half-sibling to Ontario Sires Stakes Gold champion Bob Ben And John (1:53 - $187,886) and Kentucky Sires Stakes Championship winner Ohmybelle (1:53.1 - $284,834).
The overall sale topper was Tactical Landing, Hip 70, selling for $800,000 during Tuesday's opening session. Consigned by Hunterton Sales Agency Inc. and purchased by agent Martinez Equine Inc. of East Prospect, Pennsylvania, Tactical Landing has some big shoes to fill being a full brother to the fastest two-year-old trotter of all-time, Mission Brief (1:50.2 - $1,599,587). The son of Muscle Hill-Southwind Serena is also a half-brother to Exemplar (1:53.2 - $210,432) and Earn Your Wings (1:54.4 - $155,098).
Only one yearling in North American sale history has fetched a higher final bid. Detour Hanover, a full brother to Donato Hanover, sold for $825,000 in 2011 as part of the Standardbred Horse Sales Co.'s Black Book.
Muscle Hill was the highest grossing sire of the sale, with 52 of his offspring selling for a total of $5,948,000. He had the top average price among trotters of $114,385 and ranked second overall. Somebeachsomewhere offspring had the highest average sale price at $123,615 with 39 yearlings totalling $4,821,000 in sales.
