Bobby Giguere Passes

Another member of one of Quebec’s premier racing families has passed away. Longtime racing judge Bobby Giguere passed away Tuesday night at a hospital in Quebec City, at age 74, just two months after his 63-year-old brother, Yvon.

“He’d been a sportsman all his life – skier, golfer, cyclist – but 22 months ago was diagnosed with ALS (the neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Now he’s gone to join Yvon,” said brother, Michel, 70, another of the four sons of hall-of-fame horseman Jules Giguere.

Bobby worked initially as a groom, then doubled as a parade marshall and starting judge at Hippodrome de Quebec while also working for the federal farm credit corporation for many years. When he retired from that job, he became a racing judge for the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux, a position he held until racing’s collapse in the province in 2008.

He is survived by his wife Michelle Carette, children Charles, Suzanne and Antoine, and brothers Michel and Guy.

Funeral details have not yet been finalized.
