Brazuca Shines In Liberty Bell Series
Two-year-old pacing filly Brazuca defeated Pennsylvania Sires Stakes champion Agent Q with a front-stepping score in Wednesday afternoon's round of the Liberty Bell Series at Harrah's Philadelphia.
Brazuca was the fastest of three freshman filly division winners, scoring in 1:52.3. She took the lead from post five in her $35,000 split and set fractions of :27.3, :56.3 and 1:25.3 before using a 27-second final kicker to seal the deal. Heavy 1-9 favourite Agent Q (David Miller) followed in third throughout and sprinted her final quarter in :26.3, but it was not enough to catch Brazuca, who won by one and a half lengths. Longshot Risky Romance (Andrew McCarthy) finished nearly five lengths behind in third.
Fresh off her Pennsylvania Stallion Series Championship victory on September 12, Brazuca was the second betting favourite at odds of 5-1 and paid $12.20 to win. Her 1:52.3 victory in the Liberty Bell was just one-fifth of a second off her lifetime mark, which was also a Stallion Series stakes record at The Meadows prior to her championship victory.
Driver Dave Palone has now teamed up with the brown filly for three straight victories.
Owned by John Cancelliere and trained by Tom Cancelliere, Brazuca has now won four times and has earned $64,100 in seven races. The filly by Bettors Delight out of the Grand Circuit stake winner Knock Three Times was a $65,000 yearling purchase at the Harrisburg Sale.
The other division winners each took lifetime marks as the Ron Burke stable's Rockette (Matt Kakaley) was victorious in 1:53.1 over the Cancellieres' Gemmas Beach Girl, and Well Whats New (Corey Callahan), a half-sister to Saturday's Jennas Beach Boy winner JK Will Power, stopped the clock in 1:55 for trainer Linda Toscano.
